The Church

      The Font

The first services in Cobleskill were held in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Bierck, beginning in 1905.  In 1931, a lot was acquired on Maple Road and a prefabricated Army chapel was erected and became Grace Church, Cobleskill.  The Font and the Altar at which it presently stands in the new church are from the original Grace Church.

     The High Altar

In 1960, the name of the parish was changed from Grace Church to St. Christopher of the Valley.  A new piece of property was purchased in 1965 and Suffragan Bishop Charles Persell laid the cornerstone for a new church building in 1967.  The first service was held in the new church in December 1967.  The modern building includes a broad nave, an ample and open sanctuary with free standing altar, and a parish hall wing with sacristy, kitchen, and meeting and teaching areas.

Our Icon

The icon of St. Christopher is the centerpiece of a shrine in the nave of the church.  Written (painted) by Robert Lentz, the icon was commissioned for the parish by Fr. John Crum in 1986 and is a memorial to departed parishioners.

A volunteer choir makes its offerings on Sundays and major feast days.

     The Organ

The mechanical action pipe organ was built in 1874 by Steer and Turner for the Universalist Society of Cedarville, NY, where it stood in the gallery of the church building.  Some decades later it was moved downstairs, an electric blower was installed, and the case pipes shortened somewhat. It stood mute in their building from the 1940s until 1969, when it was saved from demolition and installed in St. Christopher’s by Fr. John Crum.  Fr. Crum also renewed its mechanical action at that time. It was totally revised in 1984-85 by Fr. Crum.  The organ was dedicated in memory of Fr. Adolph Bierck by Bishop Charles Persell on October 19, 1969.
